Kenilworth, PA

Nancy Diaz-Metz grew up in Greenwich (CT) as the seventh sister of a Peruvian/American family. She holds a BA in early elementary education from Goddard College (Plainfield, VT) and an MA in leadership and community change from Antioch University (Yellow Springs, OH). Diaz-Metz has pursued her passion for ceramics through dedicated self-instruction, coursework at various community centers, and participation in specialized workshops. She is both a mentee and mentor through The Color Network–an organization that aids in the advancement of people of color in the ceramic arts. Creating and supporting opportunities for creativity, connection, and community is an important part of her journey. Diaz-Metz currently teaches beginner ceramics courses at Clay on Main (Oley, PA) and works out of her home studio in Kenilworth (PA).

"As a kid growing up in the early 60’s, I had a fascination with both pop-art and vintage wares. I've combined this love of clay, nature & design into my functional ceramics. I create image transfers using newsprint and underglaze. The prints are applied to my handmade stoneware ceramics. I use a combination of stamps, carving and transfers to create a whimsical and vintage appearance. As a potter, I believe that the most intimate thing I can do is to make an object that you will use daily. I want my mug to be the one you reach for because it not only speaks to you, but it adds value to your life through its utility. My pieces are not meant to be kept safe on the shelf. Honestly, I want them rolling around on your car floor because you use them all the time. This connection between everyday use and personal expression deeply influences the way I approach my work in the studio."
