Collection: Betsy Williams

Betsy Williams and her late husband, stone sculptor Mark Saxe, opened Rift Gallery in Rinconada (NM) in 2005 to realize their shared dream of presenting art in a thoughtful and stirring environment. Mark passed away in 2025, and Betsy is now working to preserve Mark’s legacy through the continuation of the gallery, the adjacent stone and tool business, and the stone carving classes, which will host their 26th season in the summer of 2026.

In this latest body of work, every single piece includes some component right out of the ground with minimal processing (such as crushing, sieving, milling). The underglaze pigment is a blend of three found ingredients with no commercial additives. Her combination of ignimbrite (a volcanic rock) and caliche (a lime rich clay) yields a clear glaze without additives. The subtle, miraculous beauty of these naturally occurring deposits and the profound connection to the land that they foster invests her practice with deeper meaning.
