Collection: Marie Brown

Grasston, MN

Marie Brown earned her BFA in studio art with a concentration in ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Stout (Menomonie, WI). Brown has adapted her making processes to suit a variety of firing methods throughout her career, including Cone 10 gas, electric, soda, and wood firing. Throughout each change, she has focused on making her surfaces dynamic, playing around with slips, carving, and trying other methods of making marks and glaze decorating. Brown finally settled on wood firing as her preferred method after making the decision to prioritize sustainability and build a home, studio, and wood kiln off the grid in rural Pine County. While the construction of her wood kiln was in process, she spent six years firing with a friend and refining her glaze palate to suit atmospheric firings. After the wood kiln was complete, she broke both major bones in her left wrist and had to pause making work on the wheel. This led her to develop a new appreciation for unglazed surfaces and further her exploration of slip work. With each shift in her circumstances, her work has grown and she’s excited to see where life takes her next.
